Besides making Bulletproof Coffee, coconut oil has many other wonderful uses. These include culinary and everyday uses, which we’ll list shortly. If you bought a large bottle of coconut oil and can’t use it all before its expiration date, you can refer to the five examples below. Furthermore, whether using coconut oil or any other ingredient, it’s best to consume it in moderation.
Making Mayonnaise with Coconut Oil
If you have a food processor or blender, you can make mayonnaise at home. While blending by hand is possible, it’s more time-consuming and labor-intensive. However, making your own mayonnaise eliminates the added additives associated with store-bought versions. For a healthier alternative, you can swap out soybean oil, sunflower oil, or other oils commonly used in mayonnaise making for olive oil or coconut oil. See the recipe below.
Ingredients:
- 4 egg yolks
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon pepper
- 1/2 cup olive oil
- 1/2 cup coconut oil (melted)
Instructions:
- Place the egg yolks in a blender or food processor and blend until smooth.
- Add the lemon juice, mustard, salt, and pepper and continue blending until combined.
- Gradually add the olive oil and coconut oil in small portions until combined.
- Using Coconut Oil for High-Heat Recipes
- Coconut oil is approximately 87% saturated fat, so it won’t melt even at room temperature. This high saturated fat content makes it suitable for high-heat cooking.
- For example, coconut oil is ideal for stir-frying, pan-frying, or deep-frying, as the saturated fat in coconut oil maintains its structure even when heated.
Make a chocolate crust with coconut oil
Before eating your ice cream, combine 3 tablespoons of coconut oil and 1 cup of semisweet chocolate chips in a microwave-safe container. Microwave for 20-30 seconds to melt the coconut oil and chocolate, then stir with a spoon until smooth and set aside to cool.
Once cool, you can proceed to the next step: scoop the ice cream into bowls. Simply pour the cooled chocolate sauce over the ice cream. Once the chocolate sauce solidifies, it will create a chocolate crust, just like a typical chocolate crust popsicle.
This trick can also be used on other desserts, but it’s not recommended for warm foods, as the heat may prevent the chocolate from setting into a crust.
Use coconut oil to improve dental health
Coconut oil is rich in medium-chain fatty acids, which are powerful bacteria-fighting agents and can reduce the presence of saccharolytic Streptococcus, a bacteria that causes tooth decay.
In fact, several studies have shown that rinsing your mouth with coconut oil for about 10 minutes after brushing can be just as effective as regular mouthwash in reducing bad bacteria. Japanese doctors also believe that coconut oil can actually kill bacteria and protect teeth, and it can also help improve gingivitis and reduce plaque.
Removing Stain with Coconut Oil
Baking soda has always been a great cleaning agent, but it’s even more effective when combined with coconut oil. Simply mix baking soda and coconut oil in a 1:1 ratio to create a stain remover.
Apply a thin layer of the paste to the stained area of clothing, furniture, carpet, or other items. Wait 5 minutes, then wipe off the stain remover with a clean, damp cloth. The stain will be clean. For stubborn stains, repeat the process until it’s completely removed.
