Besides being edible, nuts can also be used in cooking. Here’s a quick guide to six types of nuts, including almonds, walnuts, and macadamia nuts, and their respective cooking uses.
Almond Recipes
We can use whole or sliced almonds to make desserts like nougat and almond tarts. We can also grind almonds into a powder using a food processor or other suitable tools, then mix it with flour to create almond-flavored cakes, cookies, and other baked goods. Alternatively, we can completely replace flour with almond flour to create gluten-free, low-sugar desserts. If you prefer not to make your own almond flour, you can also buy it ready-made.
Also, a common way to use almonds is to mix them with butter, sugar, and other ingredients to make almond buttercream. This buttercream can be used as a filling for cookies and pies.
Walnut Recipes
Walnuts are relatively large nuts. Besides being used in baked goods like walnut cookies, walnut bread, walnut pie, and the recently popular longan walnut cupcakes, they’re also great for making various walnut spreads, such as maple walnut spread and chocolate walnut spread for bagels and other breads.
You can also make walnut pesto with pasta or drizzle over vegetables or meat.
Cashew Recipes
Besides using cashews in baked dishes and spreads, you can also add them to stir-fries. For example, cashew chicken recipes combine whole cashews with diced chicken breast and various seasonings, such as salt, soy sauce, or sugar. Spicy flavors can also be added with chili peppers.
Then add all the ingredients and seasonings to the pan and stir-fry. If you prefer not to pair cashews with meat, you can also use them to stir-fry seasonal vegetables.
Macadamia Nut Recipes
Macadamia nuts, considered one of the more expensive nuts, can be used in a variety of baked goods, such as the popular American macadamia nut cookies and the macadamia nut tarts, a favorite among both adults and children.
Also, macadamia nuts, despite their high fat content, can be pureed in a food processor or other tools to replace butter in a variety of thicker sauces.
Hazelnut Recipes
Hazelnuts, with their exceptionally crunchy texture, are versatile. They can be used in delicious desserts like baked cereal, cakes, cookies, and chocolate, or simply blended into hazelnut butter or mixed with other sauces. Hazelnuts have a tough skin, so if you have trouble removing it easily, toast them in the oven first and then rub the skin loose with a clean towel.
Pistachio Recipes
Dukkah, an Egyptian spice blend with unique flavor, is made from pistachios, hazelnuts, sesame seeds, and spices like cumin and pepper. It can be used as a dip for bread or as a sauce for vegetables or meat dishes.
Pistachios can also be used in baked goods, ice cream, and various sauces. You can also crush pistachios and sprinkle them directly on fish, meat, and other dishes. See the recipe below.
