Simple Tips for Draining Yogurt

Yogurt is a popular ingredient in desserts. Its milky and tangy flavor mellows out the flavors of desserts. When using yogurt in desserts, you can retain the water or drain it. Yogurts with different water contents can be used in different desserts. But how do you drain yogurt? Using a coffee filter or paper towels is practically easy.

Here are a few ways to drain yogurt:

Use plain yogurt

The flavor and tanginess vary from brand to brand, so choose your favorite. You can also use fat-free yogurt, thicker yogurt, or soy milk yogurt, but the flavor will change accordingly.

Also, using already drained Greek yogurt can save you the trouble of draining. However, if your dessert requires yogurt with water, this won’t be suitable.

    Some desserts use drained yogurt.

It contains a small amount of water and has a texture similar to tofu.

After draining for 1-2 hours, the volume should be reduced to about half its original size. However, larger quantities will naturally take longer to drain, so it’s best to check in grams.

You can pick it up with your hands and it should be as firm as cottage cheese.

Draining overnight completely removes all the moisture. This type of yogurt is used in “Yogurt Soufflé Cheesecake.” Also, after opening the yogurt, pour the whey directly into a separate container without stirring. This is important because mixing the whey with the solids will increase the draining time.

Allow the water to drain naturally during draining

        For small quantities

For small quantities, use a coffee filter. The filter paper absorbs the water, and any excess water will drip down the filter. Alternatively, line a tea strainer with paper towels and place it over the cup.

        For larger quantities

For larger quantities, spread the yogurt in a strainer lined with paper towels. If you’re in a hurry, you can place a strainer on a flat square plate, line it with paper towels, and spread the yogurt on top to shorten the draining time.

Place the filter paper in a strainer cup, then place it on top of a cup.

Place the yogurt in the strainer, then refrigerate and drain.

Place two thin paper towels in the strainer, then place it over a bowl that’s slightly smaller than the strainer so the bottom of the strainer is suspended.

Place the yogurt in the strainer, then refrigerate and drain. Spreading the yogurt as much as possible will shorten the draining time.

Drain and store in a container

After draining the yogurt completely, wrap it directly in the paper towels used for draining, place it in a storage container, and refrigerate. Water will continue to release during storage, so drain again as needed.

Whey also has uses; please save it.

Whey is the water released by yogurt and can be consumed directly. Whey can be added to batters (for yogurt muffins, yogurt chiffon cakes, etc.) or used to adjust yogurt quantities.

If you accidentally drain too much water, resulting in less yogurt than the recipe calls for, add whey to make up the difference.
