How to Freeze Spinach

After 2-3 days of refrigeration, spinach leaves may begin to lose moisture and shrivel. However, if you freeze spinach while it’s fresh, it can last for about a month.

Freezing Raw Spinach Steps

Step 1: Wash the spinach, remove the roots, and cut into 3-4 cm long pieces.

Step 2: Drain the spinach thoroughly, press it lightly with paper towels, and place it in a freezer-safe ziplock bag. Remove as much air as possible, seal the bag, and store in the freezer.

To prepare frozen raw spinach, there’s no need to thaw it first; use it directly.

Freezing Cooked Spinach

If you prefer tender, sweet spinach or want to shorten the cooking time, cook it before freezing.

Step 1: Wash the spinach and place the roots in a pot of boiling water for about 30 seconds. Add the entire spinach and cook for about 20 seconds. Remove the spinach and place it in cold water (ice water is preferred) to cool and solidify the color.

Step 2: Drain the spinach and squeeze out any excess water. Cut the spinach into small pieces about 3-4 cm wide.

Step 3: Portion the spinach according to the desired amount. Wrap each portion in freezer-safe plastic wrap or small plastic bags.

Step 4: Place all wrapped spinach into a freezer-safe ziplock bag. Remove as much air as possible, seal the bag, and store in the freezer.

To prepare frozen cooked spinach, you can cook it directly without thawing. It can also be thawed naturally before use, for example, it is very suitable for natural thawing when making cold dishes.
