Rice is a staple food for many households. It’s usually sold in large bags, so proper rice storage is crucial. The following storage method not only keeps rice fresher for longer but also prevents rice weevils.
How to Store Rice
There are two key points when storing rice. The first is to store it in an airtight container. The second is to store it in a cool, dark place.
The recommended cool, dark place is the vegetable compartment of the refrigerator. This is because the temperature and other environmental conditions in the vegetable compartment are more stable, making it ideal for rice storage.
Benefits of Storing Rice in the Vegetable Compartment
- Preventing Insects:
Put the rice in an airtight container first. Then store it in the vegetable compartment of the refrigerator to reduce insect damage by taking advantage of the low temperature.
- Preventing Freshness Loss:
As the temperature rises, the components in rice oxidize more quickly, causing the rice to lose its freshness faster. Storing it in the vegetable compartment at a low temperature can extend its freshness.
- Preventing Rice from Moisture:
Moisture can cause rice to discolor and affect its quality, so it is recommended to store it in the refrigerator rather than at room temperature. If the rice packaging has small holes for ventilation, moisture may seep in through these holes.
- Prevent rice from absorbing odors:
Rice absorbs odors from the surrounding area, so it’s best stored in an airtight container. Clean the airtight container thoroughly before storing rice.
In addition to storing rice in a food container, you can also store it in a clean plastic bottle.
If you prefer not to store rice in a container, you can also wrap the rice in small food bags in batches and then place them together in a large ziplock bag. Expel as much air as possible from the bag, seal it, and refrigerate it in the vegetable and fruit section.
Rice Shelf Life
Depending on storage conditions, rice will gradually lose its freshness and oxidize over time. This can affect the taste and may even lead to the infestation of rice weevils. Therefore, the official recommendation is to use rice within one to two months.
