Is aloe vera not suitable for everyone?

Besides being an ornamental plant and a post-sun soothing treatment, aloe vera is also commonly used as a beverage ingredient. Honey aloe and lemon aloe, for example, are great summertime heat relievers. However, there are six types of people who shouldn’t consume aloin.

Only these two types of aloe can be consumed after the skin is completely peeled!

There are two main ways to use aloe vera as a food: one is to remove the skin and use the pulp in drinks or yogurt to enhance the texture. The other is to extract aloin from the aloe leaves and use it in tablets or capsules to promote smooth bowel movements.

Aloin causes diarrhea and is hepatotoxic. These six people shouldn’t consume it!

The aloin in aloe vera leaves is a hydroxyanthracene derivative. Consumption can cause diarrhea and long-term hepatotoxicity and kidney toxicity. Excessive use can also irritate the uterus, increasing the risk of miscarriage.

Aloin levels in food should not exceed 10 ppm. Consumption is not recommended for menstruating women, pregnant women, breastfeeding women, children, or those with digestive tract, liver, or kidney diseases.

Aloin is only found in aloe vera leaves. Aloe vera diced for beverages is generally safe as long as it is peeled and cooked. However, aloe vera extract capsules or tablets require additional caution because they use aloe vera leaves.
