Various dairy products generally have a short shelf life. If you can’t finish them within their expiration date, freezing them is a good way to extend their freshness.
How to Store Milk: Freezing
Step 1: Pour the milk into an ice cube tray and freeze it in the freezer.
Step 2: Once the milk is completely frozen, pour the milk cubes into a freezer-safe ziplock bag. Remove as much air as possible from the bag, seal the bag, and return it to the freezer. It can be stored for 1-2 months.
To use frozen milk, add it directly to hot drinks like tea or coffee, or add it to a dish.
How to Store Yogurt: Freezing
If freezing plain yogurt, add sugar or jam to the yogurt to prevent the whey from separating. Sugar also protects the lactic acid bacteria in the yogurt.
Step 1: Pour plain yogurt into a freezer-safe container. Add sugar or jam (approximately 1 tablespoon per 400g of yogurt) and mix well. Skip this step for flavored yogurt.
Step 2: Cover the container and freeze. It will keep for 1-2 months.
To use frozen yogurt, move it from the freezer to the refrigerator and thaw for 2-3 hours. You can also enjoy it as an ice cream without thawing.
How to Store Cream: Freeze
Cream is a food that oxidizes easily. If you can’t use it all up quickly, storing it in an airtight container or in the freezer is a good option.
Step 1: Cut the cream into convenient pieces and wrap them in freezer-safe plastic wrap or small plastic bags.
Step 2: Place the wrapped cream into a freezer-safe ziplock bag. Remove as much air as possible from the bag, seal the bag, and freeze. It can be stored for up to 6 months.
To use frozen cream, move it from the freezer to the refrigerator the night before. Thaw overnight before use.
How to store cheese: Freeze it.
Freezing Cheese Slices
Step 1: Remove the cheese slices from their packaging and place them directly into a freezer-safe ziplock bag.
Step 2: Remove as much air as possible from the ziplock bag, seal the bag, and place it in the freezer. It can be stored for 2-3 months.
When using frozen cheese slices, it’s best to heat them. For example, you can use them on toast or in a gratin. If you don’t want to heat them, you can thaw them in the refrigerator for 2-3 hours, but the texture won’t be as good.
Freezing Cheese Powder
Step 1: If the cheese powder is unopened, place the entire can directly into a ziplock bag, seal it, and freeze it in a freezer. It can be stored for about 1 year. If the package has been opened, divide the cheese powder into small portions and wrap them in freezer-safe plastic wrap or a small plastic bag.
Step 2: Place the wrapped cheese powder in a freezer-safe ziplock bag. Remove as much air as possible, seal the bag, and store in the freezer. It will keep for 3-4 months.
If you are using frozen cheese powder, it is also recommended to heat it. For example, you can add it to soups, pasta, or sprinkle it on pizza or gratin.
Freezing Natural Cheese
Step 1: Divide the natural cheese into small portions and wrap them individually in freezer-safe plastic wrap or a small plastic bag.
Step 2: Place the wrapped natural cheese in a freezer-safe ziplock bag. Remove as much air as possible, seal the bag, and store in the freezer. It will keep for about 1 month.
If you are using frozen natural cheese, you can mix it into dishes like pasta and risotto and serve it warm. It will still taste delicious!
