If you have a large portion of toast and can’t finish it within the expiration date, what’s the best way to store it? You can refer to the following methods. Toast is actually the worst choice for refrigeration!
Freeze any leftover toast.
Refrigerator temperatures are typically set between 0°C and 10°C. Within this temperature range, the starch in toast will retrograde more quickly, causing it to become dry and tough. Therefore, it’s recommended to freeze leftover toast. This also applies to other breads.
Freezing Toast Steps
Step 1: Wrap each slice of toast separately in freezer-safe plastic wrap or a small plastic bag.
Step 2: Place all wrapped pieces of toast in a freezer-safe ziplock bag.
Step 3: Remove any air from the bag, seal it, and store in the freezer.
Defrosting Toast
- Toasting in the Oven:
Frozen toast can be eaten the same way as room-temperature toast: toast directly in a preheated oven or toaster. However, frozen toast will require slightly longer to bake than room-temperature toast. Frozen toast or bread will become soft and almost as delicious as freshly baked.
- Thawing Naturally:
If you want to thaw your toast naturally, it’s recommended to remove the frozen toast from the ziplock bag and wrap it in paper towels. Thaw at room temperature. This will take about 1-2 hours.
